Watercraft Decal

How to obtain or renew a watercraft decal, verify registration requirements, review size limits, and prepare your boat for Lake Wildwood.

Register Before You Launch

Motorized watercraft and sailboats that have not been previously registered with the Association require a New Watercraft Registration Application, proof of insurance when applicable, and valid State DNR registration.

New Watercraft?

Use the New Watercraft Registration Application for motorized units and sailboats that have not been previously registered with the Association.

Insurance May Be Required

Watercraft with a motor exceeding 10 horsepower must have qualifying marine liability insurance on file before a decal can be issued.

Lot Numbers Still Matter

Non-motorized units no longer require an Association decal, but they must still display the member’s lot number on the rear sides of the unit.

My Watercraft Is Already Registered

1

Update Insurance

You must re-submit a copy of your most current, valid insurance policy before a decal can be issued.

2

Update State Registration

Illinois State DNR registration generally expires every three years. A valid registration must be on file before a decal can be issued.

3

Receive Decal

Once required documents are reviewed and accepted, the current year’s Association decal may be issued.

Insurance policies must be in the Association member’s name and show the watercraft unit covered.

Watercraft Size Limits

No exceptions are made to the size rule. Members are strongly encouraged to contact the Association prior to purchasing any watercraft to verify it meets registration requirements.

Approved Mid-Engine Boats 21.0'
Fishing Boats 19.0'

Display Requirements

Motorized Watercraft

Motorized watercraft must display the member’s lot numbers, current year’s decal, and state watercraft registration numbers and tag if applicable to the unit.

Non-Motorized Watercraft

Kayaks, canoes, paddleboats, and other non-motorized units no longer require an Association decal, but they must display the member’s lot number on the rear sides of the unit.

See the Placement Guide above for exact decal and identification placement details.

Towing Flag Rules

The Illinois watercraft towing rule requires the operator of any watercraft towing a person or persons to display a bright or brilliant orange flag measuring not less than 12 inches per side.

The flag must be displayed at the highest point of the area surrounding the boat’s helm so it is visible from all directions while the person or persons being towed depart the boat in preparation for towing and until reentry into the boat when the activity has ceased.

This State rule will be strictly enforced. The Association rule also still applies: a bright orange flag, minimum 12 inches square, must be displayed by the spotter when a person is downed and must be visible for 360 degrees.
